Registration for attendance (or non-attendance) is obligatory for all degree students, regardless of whether they are bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral students.

If you are a first-year student, follow the instructions provided in your acceptance letter and also read the online instructions for new students. You should also follow the instructions for new students if you already have a valid right to study at the University of Helsinki and you have now been awarded a new right to study.

The registration instructions for doctoral students are provided on the page instructions for doctoral candidates.

When completing your annual registration, you should also update your contact details and keep them up to date.

Registration for attendance

To study at the university, you are required to register as an attending student. The registration period for the 2017–2018 academic year is 1 May–31 August 2017. As a bachelor’s or master’s degree student, you are required to pay the Student Union membership fee. If you have both a bachelor’s/master’s and doctoral student status, you are required to pay the Student Union fee for bachelor’s/master’s degree students.

If you have exceeded the normative duration of your study, you need to apply for an extension from your faculty before registration.

Make sure you register as a non-attending student for any term for which you have a statutory reason for non-attendance. This way, your non-attendance will not count towards the normative duration for attaining your degree.

Note that if you go out as an exchange student or take courses at a different Finnish university under the JOO agreement governing flexible study rights, you must register as an attending student at the University of Helsinki.

If you are a student of medicine, dentistry or pharmacy and you temporarily practice as a licensed or authorised professional within the aforementioned fields in Finland, you have to be registered as attending at the University. The National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health (Valvira) registers all healthcare professionals in a central register (Terhikki). If you register as non-attending, you will be removed from the Terhikki register and you will be unable to practice healthcare.

Automatic registration

Automatic registration is available from 1 May to 31 August 2017, provided that you have access to the university systems. The automatic registration will be activated in real time, concurrently with your payment. If you had non-attending status in the previous academic year, your access to the university systems will be automatically activated to enable registration. Your access will be active until 31 August 2017. If you don’t have a University of Helsinki user account yet, you can activate your user account here.

Register through Oili. If you have already registered through WebOodi, don’t register again through Oili. Otherwise you will be charged the Student Union membership fee twice.

If you register only for the autumn term (1 August–31 December), you are automatically registered as non-attending for the spring term (1 January–31 July).

Registration in person

If you use the general reference number on the bank transfer for your Student Union membership fee or if you pay through a foreign bank, you have to register in person. This means that you need to send or bring the receipt of the payment to Student Services. You can also send the receipt as an email attachment. A printout from your online bank is acceptable if it shows the Archive ID. Emails that arrive no later than 11:59 p.m. on 31 August 2017 will be accepted. You will be notified when your email has been processed.

Registration for non-attendance

Registering as a non-attending student must be made within the same registration period, 1 May–31 August 2017. You can register for non-attendance through Oili if you are a bachelor’s or master’s degree student and you have access to the university system.

You can also register for non-attendance by contacting Student Services by email or in person. Please remember to specify your student number or date of birth in your message. Emails that arrive no later than 11:59 p.m. on 31 August 2017 will be accepted. You will be notified when your email has been processed.

Registration as a non-attending student can be changed to registration as an attending student at any time during the academic year. However, if you have been non-attending for several years, you should first contact Student Services to check the status of your right to study. Payment of the Student Union membership fee and automatic registration is only possible during the actual registration period. At other times, you have to use the general reference number when on the bank transfer for your Student Union membership fee and deliver a receipt of your payment to Student Services to have your registration activated. You can also send the receipt as an email attachment.

Registration for the spring term

If you would like to register as attending for the spring term, i.e. you registered as non-attending for the entire academic year or as attending just for the autumn term during the registration period (1 May–31 August), please follow these steps:

There is no set registration period, but registration has to be completed before studies begin.

If you have registered only for the autumn term and you graduate during that term, you can no longer register for the spring term after your graduation.

If you are a bachelor’s or master’s degree student, and you have registered as non-attending for the spring term, you can update your status as attending and pay the Student Union fee through Oili. Oili is open from 1 November  2017 to 15 January 2018. If you have registered as non-attending for the autumn term, you must first activate your user account. Alternatively, you can also pay the Student Union fee by using the general reference number and then send or bring the receipt to Student Services for registration. You can also send the receipt as an email attachment.

The spring term tag for your student card can be picked up from the beginning of January at the HYY Services Office.

If you did not register at all during the registration period 1 May–31 August or if you have forgotten to register in a previous year, please refer to the instructions in the section Forgot to register?

Forgot to register?

If you do not register for attendance or non-attendance during the registration period (1 May–31 August), you will lose your right to pursue a degree at the University of Helsinki. Please note that if you fail to register as either attending or non-attending, the elapsed time is included in your target study time.

If your normative duration of study ended on 31 July 2017 and you have been registered as either attending or non-attending as well as applied for/received an extension from your faculty, then you do not have to pay a re-enrolment fee when registering after the actual registration time.

The process for reactivating your right to study depends on the timing of your application for readmission.

Returning during the academic year in which you forgot to register

If you, after having failed to register at the University, wish to register as an attending or non-attending student during the same academic year, i.e. before 31 July, you are required to pay the re-enrolment fee. Please read on for payment and registration instructions.

Returning later

If you wish to continue your studies after 31 July, you have to apply for readmission into the faculty. The application for readmission has to be addressed to the faculty where you held the right to pursue a degree. If you held the right to pursue a degree in several faculties, you can submit the application(s) to the faculties in which you wish to continue studying.

Once the faculty has reactivated you right to study, read on for payment and registration instructions.

Payments and registration

You have to pay both the re-enrolment fee (see payment information below) and the Student Union fee.

After paying the fees, you need to send the the receipts of the payments to Student Services. A printout from your online bank is accepted as a receipt if it includes the Archive ID. If you have a readmission decision from your faculty, remember to include it as well. Please note that the re-enrolment fee is degree-specific.

Re-enrolment fee

The re-enrolment fee is EUR 35. The fee must be paid to the University of Helsinki account:
NORDEA FI23 1660 3000 0777 20, payment reference number 0253 62312.
