This article concerns all degree students regardless of whether they are studying in the new degree programmes or according to the old degree structures.

Registration for attendance (or non-attendance) is obligatory for all degree students, regardless of whether they are bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral students. Please click here for registration instructions for doctoral students.

If you are a first-year student, please register according to the instructions in your letter of admission. If you hold the right to study at the University of Helsinki and receive a new right to study, you should also follow the instructions in your letter of admission.

If you were granted the right to study last year, but you registered as a non-attending student for the first academic year (e.g., due to military service or other statutory reasons), please see the instructions in the first section of this article under ‘Registration in person’.

The Student Union membership fee is voluntary for doctoral students. Please click here for payment instructions. If you have both a bachelor’s/master’s and doctoral student status, you are required to pay the Student Union fee for bachelor’s/master’s degree students.

Automatic registration in Oili

During the registration period from 1 May to 2 September 2019, you can register automatically through Oili if you have a University of Helsinki user account. In this case, both your transaction and registration are completed in real-time. You can register here. If you registered as non-attending for the previous academic year, your user account will be automatically activated to enable the annual registration. Your user account is valid until 2 September. If you do not have a university user account yet, you can activate it here.

If you register as an attending student only for the autumn semester (1 August–31 December), you will automatically be registered as non-attending for the spring semester (1 January–31 July).

If for any reason you are unable to register automatically through Oili, you can register in person at Student Services. You can pay the Student Union membership fee and register automatically through Oili only during the regular registration period. At other times, you must register in person.

Registration in person

If you have registered as non-attending for your first academic year due to a statutory reason, you do not have a valid user account. If you do not have a user account or cannot register automatically for some other reason, you can also pay the Student Union fee by using the general reference number and then send the receipt as an email attachment to studentinfo@helsinki.fi or bring the receipt to Student Services. A printout from your online bank is accepted as a receipt if it includes the Archive ID. Emails that arrive no later than 11:59 p.m. on 2 September will be accepted. You will be notified when your email has been processed.

  • Danske Bank FI80 8000 1500 0668 82

The general reference number is 28 04990. If you pay the fee using the general reference number, send or bring a receipt of your payment to Student Services no later than 2 September to have your registration activated.

Payment by international money transfer

The account number for international transfers is Nordea Bank Ltd. FI 80 1573 3000 0324 57 and the BIC code is NDEAFIHH.

If you pay the fee by international money transfer, your registration will not be activated automatically. You need to submit a receipt of your payment to Student Services no later than 2 September 2019 to have your registration activated.

When to register for attendance

You should register as an attending student if you intend to complete studies during the academic year. Remember to register as a non-attending student for those terms for which you have a statutory reason for your non-attendance and to submit a certificate of the reasons for your non-attendance to Student Services. By doing so, you ensure that your non-attendance will not reduce the duration of your degree studies. For further information on statutory reasons for non-attendance, please click here. You can also register as a non-attending student for a reason other than those defined as statutory reasons, but your non-attendance may reduce the duration of your degree studies.

If you have exceeded the normative duration of your study, you need to apply for an extension from your faculty before registration.

Note that if you go out as an exchange student or take courses at a different Finnish university under the JOO agreement governing flexible study rights, you must register as an attending student at the University of Helsinki.

If you are a student of medicine, dentistry or pharmacy and you temporarily practice as a licensed or authorised professional within the aforementioned fields in Finland, you have to be registered as attending at the University. The National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health (Valvira) registers all healthcare professionals in a central register (Terhikki). If you register as non-attending, you will be removed from the Terhikki register and you will be unable to practice healthcare.

Registration for non-attendance for academic year 2019-2020

Registering as a non-attending student must be made within the same registration period, 1 May–2 September. You can register for non-attendance through Oili if you are a bachelor’s or master’s degree student and you have access to the university system.

You can also register for non-attendance by contacting Student Services by email or in person. Please remember to specify your student number or date of birth in your message. Emails that arrive no later than 11:59 p.m. on 2 September will be accepted. You will be notified when your email has been processed.

Remember to register as a non-attending student for those terms for which you have a statutory reason for your non-attendance and to submit a certificate verifying the reasons for your non-attendance to Student Services. By doing so, you ensure that your non-attendance will not reduce the duration of your degree studies. For further information on statutory reasons for non-attendance, please click here.

You can change your status from non-attendance to attendance at any time during the academic year. For instructions, please see the section ‘Registration for attendance for academic year 2019–2020’. However, if your non-attendance has lasted several years, you should first contact Student Services to verify the status of your right to study.

Cancelling your registration

You can cancel your registration by contacting Student Services.

To cancel your registration for the autumn term or the entire academic year, contact Student Services by 2 September. Registrations for the spring term must be cancelled by 15 January.

You can claim a refund of the Student Union fee from the Student Union member services by 30 September/31 January.

You can change your status from non-attendance to attendance at any time during the academic year by paying the Student Union membership fee and submitting the receipt to Student Services. However, you cannot change your status from attendance to non-attendance after the registration deadline on 2 September.

Forgot to register?

If you do not register for attendance or non-attendance during the registration period (1 May–2 September), you will lose your right to pursue a degree at the University of Helsinki. Please note that if you fail to register as either attending or non-attending, the elapsed time is included in your target study time.

The process for reactivating your right to study depends on the timing of your application for readmission.

Returning during the academic year in which you forgot to register

If, after having failed to register as an attending or non-attending student, you wish to do so during the same academic year (i.e., by 31 July), you need not apply to your faculty for the reinstatement of your right to study. You need only pay the re-enrolment fee and, when registering for attendance, the Student Union membership feeand submit the receipts of payment to Student Services.

Re-enrolment fee

The re-enrolment fee is EUR 35. The fee must be paid to the University of Helsinki account:

IBAN: FI58 5000 0120 3778 32
SWIFT (BIC): OKOYFIHH

Reference: 99113034
Bank: OP pankki, Gebhardinaukio 1, FI-00510 Helsinki, Finland

NB If you are not a degree student but have the right to pursue non-degree studies (e.g. specialist training) you do not have to pay the re-enrolment fee. If you have questions regarding this, please contact studentinfo@helsinki.fi.

If your normative duration of study ended on 31 July 2019 and you have been registered as either attending or non-attending as well as applied for/received an extension from your faculty, then you do not have to pay a re-enrolment fee when registering after the actual registration time.

Returning later

If you do not pay the re-enrolment fee and register during the same academic year by 31 July, and instead register during the following academic year, you must first apply to your faculty for the reinstatement of your right to complete a degree.

Once the faculty has reactivated you right to study, you have to pay both the re-enrolment fee and the Student Union fee, and send the receipts of the payments to Student Services. A printout from your online bank is accepted as a receipt if it includes the Archive ID. If you have a readmission decision from your faculty, remember to include it as well.

Students liable to pay for tuition

Students who are liable to pay for tuition are automatically registered as attending once they have paid their tuition fees. The tuition fee includes the compulsory Student Union (HYY) membership fee. Please read more in the Tuition fees instructions.
