All degree students must register as attending or non-attending for each academic year, regardless of whether they are pursuing a Bachelor’s, Master’s or doctoral degree. If you have the right to pursue both a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree and a doctoral degree, you will have to pay the undergraduate membership fee for the Student Union of the University of Helsinki (HYY).

The membership fee is optional for doctoral students.

Registering as an attending student for academic year 2019-2020

All doctoral students who register as attending must estimate in conjunction with their annual registration how actively they intend to pursue the doctoral degree during the coming academic year, and provide information on completed studies for the previous academic year.

The full-time or part-time status (activity rate) of doctoral studies and work on the dissertation is determined jointly by the doctoral student and the supervisor. Doctoral students should contact their supervisors in good time before registering for the academic year to make the estimate. Read more about the registration as a part- or full-time student.

A doctoral student whose study progress is being monitored cannot register as attending before the monitoring has been cleared. If your studies are currently being monitored, you register as non-attending until the matter is taken care of.

The registration period for the academic year 2019–2020 is from 1 May to 2 September 2019.

If you have a valid username for the University network, you can register through Oili and announce your intended rate of study activity. You will also have to give your assurance that you have conducted a conversation on the estimate with your supervisor.

NB! The usernames of all students who registered as non-attending for the academic year 2018–2019 have been automatically activated to enable annual registration. The automatic activation will be valid until 2 September 2019. Please note that the usernames are temporarily activated solely for the purpose of annual registration. If you intend to register as non-attending for the academic year 2019–2020, you are not allowed to e.g. register for courses, even though the activation of your user account temporarily makes it possible.

If you do not have a University of Helsinki username you can activate your username here. After doing that you can register through Oili.

If you cannot activate your username, please contact Student services.

If you don’t have an official Finnish personal identity number or you have not yet informed it for student register, please make your registration in person by sending email to studentinfo@helsinki.fi or by visiting the Student Services for registration.

Registering as an attending student for spring term 2020

If you wish to register as an attending student for the spring term, you can do so in Oili or by sending an email to studentinfo@helsinki.fi. Oili is open from 1 November 2019 to 15 January 2020. Please note that you cannot register as attending if the progress of your doctoral studies is being monitored.

Student Union membership fee for academic year 2019-2020

Registering for the spring term 2019

You cannot register as attending if the progress of your doctoral studies is being monitored.

Did you forget to register?

If you do not register as attending or non-attending during the registration period (1 May – 31 August), you will lose your right to complete a degree.

If you forgot to register but want to reinstate your doctoral study right and register as attending or non-attending during the same academic year (by 31 July), you can do so simply by paying the re-enrolment fee prescribed by the University.

If your studies have been on hold for a longer time and it has been more than one academic year since you last registered at the University, you must apply for the reinstatement of your right to pursue doctoral studies from your home faculty.

Detailed instructions on how to apply for readmission and pay the re-enrolment fee are available in the instructions on resuming doctoral studies.
