Attendance registration of doctoral researchers

The instruction belongs to the following themes

By selecting a degree programme you are able to see the general content as well as the possible degree programme-specific content. You do not have to select a degree programme to see the Open University's instructions.

All degree students must register as attending or non-attending for each study right every academic year. Register as an attending student for those study rights, in which you are planning to complete studies during the academic year. If you register for a study right in Bachelor’s or Master’s degree, you need to pay the Student Union fee.

The Student Union membership fee is optional for doctoral researchers.

Registering as an attending student for academic year 2023–2024

The registration period for the academic year 2023–2024 is from 1 April to 31 August 2023.

If you have a valid username for the University network, you can register through Oili.

NB! The usernames of all students who registered as non-attending for the academic year 2022–2023 have been automatically activated to enable annual registration. The automatic activation will be valid until 31 August 2023. Please note that the usernames are temporarily activated solely for the purpose of annual registration. If you intend to register as non-attending for the academic year 2023–2024, you are not allowed to e.g. register for courses, even though the activation of your user account temporarily makes it possible.

If you do not have a University of Helsinki username you can activate your username here. After doing that you can register through Oili.

If you cannot activate your username, please contact Student Services.

If you don’t have an official Finnish personal identity number or you have not yet informed it for student register, please make your registration in person by sending email to studentinfo@helsinki.fi or by visiting the Student Services for registration.

Registration has ended.

Student Union membership fee

The Student Union membership fee is voluntary for doctoral researchers.

If you want to join the Student Union for the full academic year or just the autumn term, you can pay the membership fee when you register as an attending student. If you register through Oili, you can pay the fee through an online bank following the instructions in Oili. Your membership will then be immediately entered into the Student Register.

If Oili registration is not possible, please pay the Student Union fee and send or show the receipt to the Student Services.

As a doctoral researcher you can join the Student Union any time of the academic year. The student card and benefits connected to it are available only as a member of the Student Union. The green student card for doctoral researchers can be ordered from Frank.

Registering as a non-attending student for academic year 2023–2024

You will have to register between 1 April and 31 August 2023, even if you intend to be a non-attending student.

You can register as a non-attending student through Oili if you have a valid username for the University network, or at Student Services either via email to studentinfo@helsinki.fi or in person. If you register via email, make sure to indicate either your student number or date of birth in your message. Emails received no later than at 23.59 on 31 August 2023 will be accepted. You will receive a confirmation when your email has been processed.

If you register as non-attending and plan to have a break from your doctoral studies, don't forget to keep your supervisors, your responsible person and the possible members of your thesis committee updated of your plans.

Did you forget to register?

If you do not register as attending or non-attending during the registration period (1 April – 31 August), you will lose your study right.

If you forgot to register but want to reinstate your doctoral study right and register as attending or non-attending during the same academic year (by 31 July), you can do so simply by paying the re-enrolment fee prescribed by the University and sending the receipt to the Student Services.

If your studies have been on hold for a longer time and it has been more than one academic year since you last registered at the University, you must apply for the reinstatement of your study right from your faculty.

Detailed instructions on how to apply for readmission and pay the re-enrolment fee are available in the instructions on resuming doctoral studies.
