The faculties usually have a date in spring before when you can apply for an extension. But there is flexibility in the application. Applications submitted before the given date will be processed before the end of the academic year. You can continuously apply for an extension. The processing time is usually a few weeks.
If you are planning on taking a break from your studies, you should apply for an extension only when you are planning on actively pursuing your studies again. An extension can be granted also after your study right has ended.
