By selecting a degree programme you are able to see the general content as well as the possible degree programme-specific content. You do not have to select a degree programme to see the Open University's instructions.

Registration for attendance (or non-attendance) is obligatory for all degree students, regardless of whether they are bachelor’s or master’s students or doctoral researchers. Degree students need to register as attending or non-attending for each study right. Read instructions for doctoral researchers.

Start here

To study at the university, you are required to register as an attending student for those study rights, in which you are planning to complete studies.

  • The registration period for the academic year 2024–2025 is 1 April – 2 September. It is possible to change the spring term 2025 registration during 1.11.24-15.1.25.

If you register as attending, please remember to also pay the Student Union fee and the Kela healthcare fee.

The instructions given on this page apply to bachelor’s and master’s degree students. If you are a doctoral student, please follow the instructions on attendance registration for doctoral researchers.

  • If you are a first-year student, please register according to the instructions in your letter of admission. If you already hold a study right at the University of Helsinki and receive a new study right, you should also follow the instructions in your letter of admission.
  • If you were granted the study right last year, but you registered as a non-attending student for the first academic year (e.g., due to military service or other statutory reasons), please see the instructions in the first section of this article under ‘Registration in person’.
  • Did you forget to register? Please see the page Forgotten registration and re-enrolment fee for instructions on what to do.

When to register for attendance

You should register as an attending for those study rights in which you intend to complete studies during the academic year. Remember to register as a non-attending student for those terms for which you have a statutory reason for your non-attendance and to submit a certificate of the reasons for your non-attendance to Student Services. By doing so, you ensure that your non-attendance will not reduce the duration of your degree studies. Read more about statutory reasons for non-attendance. You can also register as a non-attending student for a reason other than those defined as statutory reasons, but your non-attendance may reduce the duration of your degree studies.

  • If you have exceeded the normative duration of your study, you need to apply for an extension from your faculty before registration.
  • If you want to register as attending for your master's studies when you are about to graduate from your bachelor's degree program but your application for a degree diploma has not yet been processed, you can register using your bachelor's study right. Registering for attendance this way is valid for your master's studies, because your master's study right is activated once you are awarded your bachelor's degree.
  • Register as attending also for the term during which you will be graduating, and for the study right from which you will be graduating.
  • If you go out as an exchange student or take courses at a different Finnish university under the JOO agreement governing flexible study rights, you must register as an attending student at the University of Helsinki.
  • If you are a student of medicine, dentistry or pharmacy and you temporarily practice as a licensed or authorised professional within the aforementioned fields in Finland, you have to be registered as attending at the University. The National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health (Valvira) registers all healthcare professionals in a central register (Terhikki). If you register as non-attending, you will be removed from the Terhikki register and you will be unable to practice healthcare.

Automatic registration in Oili

During the registration period from 1 April to 2 September 2024 or for spring term 2025 from 1.11.2024 to 15.1.2025, you can register automatically through Oili if you have a University of Helsinki user account. In this case, both your transaction and registration are completed in real-time. Your user account is valid until 31 August. If you do not have a university user account yet, you can activate it with instructions from IT-Helpdesk.

  • If you register as an attending student only for the autumn term (1 August–31 December), you will automatically be registered as non-attending for the spring term (1 January–31 July).
  • You can pay the Student Union membership fee and register automatically through Oili only during the regular registration period. At other times you need to register in person.

Registration for non-attendance for academic year 2024-2025

A student walking towards the Porthania entrance.

Registering as a non-attending student must be made within the same registration period, 1 April – 2 September or for spring 2025 1.1123-15.1.25. You can register for non-attendance through Oili if you are a bachelor’s or master’s degree student and you have access to the university system. Register as non-attending for the study rights, in which you are not planning to complete any studies during the academic year.

You can also register for non-attendance by contacting Student Services by emailing studentinfo@helsinki.fi or in person. Please remember to specify which study rights you will be registering for and your student number or date of birth in your message. Emails that arrive no later than 11:59 p.m. on 2 September will be accepted. You will be notified when your email has been processed.

Remember to register as a non-attending student for those terms for which you have a statutory reason for your non-attendance and to submit a certificate verifying the reasons for your non-attendance to Student Services. By doing so, you ensure that your non-attendance will not reduce the duration of your degree studies. Further information on statutory reasons for non-attendance.

You can change your status from non-attendance to attendance at any time during the academic year. However, if your non-attendance has lasted several years, you should first contact Student Services to verify the status of your study right.

Registering when granted extension to study right

Näkymä Aleksandrian aulan kattoikkunasta.

If you have been granted extension to your study right to finish your degree and you are not liable to pay tuition fee, you can do the annual registration in Oili during the registration period, the same way as during the validity of your original study right. If you cannot access Oili, if, for example, your user account is not valid anymore, you can do the annual registration in person. Register in person also if the extension has been granted outside the annual registration period. If you are liable to pay tuition fee, please contact International Student Advice (international-studentinfo@helsinki.fi) for instructions.

You need to register within the annual registration period if

  • you have been granted extension for a period that covers two different academic years, you have already registered for the first academic year of the extension, and you are now registering for the second academic year.
    • Example 1: You have been granted extension for the academic years 2023-2024 and 2024-2025 and you have already earlier registered for the academic year 2023-2024 and you are now registering for the academic year 2024-2025
    • Example 2:  You have been granted extension for spring term 2024 and autumn term 2024, you have already earlier registered for spring term 2024 and you are now registering for autumn term 2025.

You do not need to register within the annual registration period if

  • you have been granted extension to a study right you have not yet registered for earlier or
  • you have been granted a new extension, even if you have been registered already for a previous extension.

For a new extension, you can do the annual registration any time during the validity of the extension. However, you cannot complete any courses before you have registered as attending.

Please notice that you might be required to pay a re-enrollment fee in connection with the annual registration for the extension if

  • you have been granted extension for two different academic years at a time and you have not registered during the annual registration period for the second academic year, even if you were registered as attending or non-attending for the first academic year or
  • it is the first extension granted to you in this degree program and you had neglected the annual registration for the degree program already during the end of the validity of the original study right.

Please do not pay the re-enrollment fee before you receive the decision of the extension and you have received instructions to pay the fee.

Cancelling your registration

You can cancel your registration either in Oili or by contacting Student Services. You will have to cancel your registration for the autumn term or the whole academic year by 2 September. Registrations for the spring term must be cancelled by 15 January. You can then claim a refund of the Student Union fee from the Student Union member services. More information on the refund of the healthcare fee (FSHS) on Kela's website.

Students liable to pay for tuition

Students who are liable to pay for tuition are automatically registered as attending once they have paid their tuition fee. The tuition fee and scholarships covering the tuition fee contain the compulsory Student Union (HYY) membership fee. Please read the tuition fee instructions.

NB: Starting from the autumn term 2023, the healthcare fee is no longer included in the tuition fee or scholarships covering the tuition fee. Students need to pay the healthcare fee themselves to Kela (link to Kela website).

Students who are exempt from paying tuition fees can register themselves in Oili when the registration period is open. Please note that you can only register for the term(s) for which you are exempt from paying tuition fees.
